Produce Sales
Nearly 100 years later, the Kontos family expanded the business, moving to Finley Avenue and selling other produce items.

Kontos Brokerage founded.

Kontos Farms
Kontos Farms founded.
Company Founded
In 1888 Alex Kontos founded his company and started selling bananas out of a small warehouse on Morris Avenue in Birmingham, AL. The company would go on to be formally incorporated in 1913.
1978
The Third Generation
In 2003 its current president, John Kontos, acquired sole ownership of Kontos Fruit Company becoming the 3rd generation owner. In the following years Mr. Kontos would take the company to new heights, vastly expanding the size of our operation.
2008
Flavor Pic Tomato
Flavor Pic Tomato was acquired by Kontos, greatly expanding the tomato operation.
2022
Our story
In 1888, Alex Kontos sold his first stalk of bananas. He knew what it meant to work hard, and he knew his customers worked hard. He wanted to provide them with the best product and service possible. Alex Kontos' simple beginnings more than 120 years ago based on a love for his business, commitment to quality, and consistent customer satisfaction built a foundation for what is one of the leading produce companies in the Southeast. Today, John Kontos, its third-generation owner, has built a family of companies to service an even wider range of customers. The Kontos family of companies now includes Flavor Pic Tomato Company, Kontos Farms, Kontos Brokerage Company, and Southern Distribution & Transportation.

In 2012 Alex Kontos Fruit acquired Flavor Pic Tomato Co, to become one the largest tomato re-packers in the Southeast. This partnership strengthened product accessibility and purchasing power allowing AKF and FPT to give customers competitive pricing while continuing to provide exceptional quality and customer service.
Alex Kontos Fruit operates an in-house produce brokerage service which allows us a unique opportunity to reach other areas of the country to provide our exceptional service to people outside our normal delivery range.
